Pearson is remembered because he made a really special effort to solve the Québec problem, which was becoming very serious in those years, very serious because of the Quiet Revolution in Québec. Lesage was much in favour of the Liberal Party. He was a federal minister before, so he really wanted to support the Liberals in Québec, but he had some conditions. He wanted Ottawa and the federal government to give more powers to Québec. It was a fight between Ottawa and Québec, and Pearson was kind of the "arbiter" between these forces.
Pearson is remembered for the B&B Commission. No doubt it was an important gesture. It is important, too, because in the federal-provincial relations he accepted that Québec opt out of many programs and Québec opted out of, I think, twenty programs and received a part of the federal income tax. That was very important.
That was very important, too, when the discussion was on the Canada Pension Plan. Québec was allowed to have its own Pension Plan.
